for a while we have not updated the Favela Painting site as we considered the Rio Cruzeiro painting finished. Directly after our return to Holland howerever, we have started working on several wonderful projects, including the ‘Grand Finale’ of the favela painting project - codename ‘O Morro’. We were so proud to see the massive media interest for our project. All major Brazilian networks made it out to Vila Cruzeiro to cover the story. Even GLOBO, the largest, who - after the death of reporter Tim Lopes - vowed to never write a single positive word about this favela, managed to send in a team and tell the world this tale of art and inspiration…

We had a great week of media attention. Our project made CNN, Fox and Al Jazeera. It was spotted on national TV in Germany, france and even Japan and aired on about every TV station here in Brazil. We were extremely happy to see one of our initial goals reached: to try to get some positive news about favela’s like Vila Cruzeiro in the media. Here’s some clippings from the local papers.

Even though the police is invading Vila Cruzeiro at the moment, we are quite hopefull we will have the painting finished in time for our big inauguration party on the weekend of 17-19 october. It’s gonna be hot in Rio, so get a ticket, pack your bags and join the party!

Strangely enough it didn’t make big international news, but two weeks ago three chinese workers and a vietnamese consul got kidnapped after visiting the Christ statue. They got taken to Vila Cruzeiro where they somehow managed to escape the watercontainer they were held in. They made it out safe & sound, but the relatively calm period in the favela came to a prompt end. A huge police invasion followed and is still going on. Hundreds of officers stormed the favela, backed by helicopters and armoured vehicles. After weeks of sun and hard work, three drops of rain gave us the time to upload some fresh pics of the painting. Their first mural was finished early 2007. It depicts a boy with a kite and is located in the heart of Vila Cruzeiro, a notorious slum in Rio de Janeiro.
