Although theMustachio is something like a snowboard website we still have other interests, like Guitar Hero for instance..or art. That's great becaue there's tons of art in snowboarding, so there's the link with snowboarding again. Every year new designs on snowboards, clothing or whatever you spend your money on.
Let's have a look behind the scenes meeting some of the guys that are responsible for the several designs in snowboarding. Meet El Miro, a graphic artist from the flatlands.

Give us a little introduction? Who is El Miro and where does he come from?
El Miro is an Amsterdam based graphic designer, who made his marks in and on society.

So you are designing under the name El Miro but what does it mean?
The Miro was a supermarket with a big parking lot where we used to skate, A group of friends who always skate, write, party together.. we called ourselves EL MIRO crew or 5.13 (5= E 13=M).

Tell us how you started with drawing and painting?
I draw as long as I can remember, I started with graffiti around 1983 when the book subway art came out.

A book? What was so inspiring about the book subway art?
It's the first book about graffiti ever, check
(the book) The roots of graffiti today.

Do you have any pieces at home, on the wall?
Yeah I got the Master Po on canvas.

When did you know that your art is not something like a hobby, but more like a passion?
When you get caught three times, you'll know.

Haha.. When did you think art was something you could do as work instead of something at 4AM in back alleys?
Back then I worked at a sign maker. My job was to design stickers for the local plumber to put on his car. But I got way carried away in designing, so that's when I knew I wasn't in the right place.

That sticker was probably not something to be proud of and show you buddies. What piece of work are you the most stoked on and why is that?
The projection of Master Po during Todays Art Festival 2007. I won a boomerang pitch and my work got projected on 33 meter high building in the centre of The Hague.

Master Po Todays Art Festival 2007 what is that festival about what was the assignment?
I quote "Every year, for one weekend, the TodaysArt Festival transforms the city centre of The Hague into an inspiring stronghold of creativity and audiovisual experiences. This year, over 200 artists will contribute to the festival, where many different art disciplines are represented, such as film, modern dance, visual art, photography and music."
The assignmetnt was to design a boomerangcard (e-cards and postcards) to promote the festival.

There must be something going on in the head that comes up with all the ideas, what is your biggest influence?
Everything that enters my brain through my eyes and ears, eeeew sounds creepy I hope they don't use little spaceships for this.

Damn dude, that really is creepy. Glad your style isn't that creepy, else we wouldn't have this talk. How would you describe your "El Miro" style?
Rough and big, I always try to put in secret messages, for instance in the new Centurion design, the cracks in board say centurion.

What's the statement you want to make with your art or is it just expressing yourself and don't care about what people think of it?
I'm not so much of a talker, I like it when the artwork speaks for itself. Love it or hate it.

How do you feel about hired work compared to doing your own thing? Is it something inevitable or does it let you thing in different directions.
Well most of the time people hire me for a certain style they have seen in my portfolio so it's not that bad and besides when they hire me I get paid, and when I get paid I can do more of my own thing.

Drawing all day long.. do you still like to do your own thing after a hard day of work?
Yeah offcourse, I am always trying out new styles first on elmiro.

You are a snowboarder right, one from back in the days?
Hell yeah, I started when Snowworld was still in a tent. (editor: a long long time ago.)

Since you've been the art guy are your decisions for buying your decks based on the print or specifications (before imperium)? Can't imagine to see an art guy riding a goofy printed snowboard..
My first decks where ugly as hell, but you have to start somewhere I guess.. My firts "real" deck was a M3, I bought it because of the artwork back then.

Now it's up to you to make those decks look pretty. You created this years Imperium deck for Demir Julia, how does it feel to see a shredstick with your art on it?
Like a dream come true.

How did you end up with Imperium Snowboards?
Trough the wonderful world of community sites.

Who came up with the idea of the graphics. Was it your or Demir or did you guys had lots of brainstorm sessions about it?
It was all me, They said just make something, and the rules to live by where, No Pink, and no hippie crap. So I went for the ghetto stilo and they liked it so much so it became the pro model DJ4.

What inspired you for these graphics?
I wanted it to be a real hip hop ganster stilo, so I was inspired by gangster, hip hop, cars, tattoo, bling. You know the drill.

Is the Imperium board a one-off or are we going to see more El Miro decks?
For next year I designed the centurion series, I just saw it on the Ispo in Munich. I think it came out real good.

What's it about?
Big cracked letters, the colors are inspired on the US basketball league, for instance purple and yellow as in the LA Lakers

Are you down with all the fluoness from this and next season?
I thought the pastel colors would be hot now, but I never get tired on fluo I think.

What's the worst deck you've ever seen? And who's designs you are really stoked on?
It sucks when graffiti style is used wrong, like the technine logo. I think the new forum line, "happy boarding" is really cool!

So you are designing boards, but what about clothing be something for you?
I already designing clothing, I designed a hoody for Nikita, and I've got my own shirts. (editor: see his website)

What does El Miro have in store for the world?
check
elmiro.nl/shop haha. Collabs are really hot these days I hope to do some myself. I heard Mustachio was interested so maybe I should give them a call...
Collab that shit, If I see your work it seems that you are down with mustaches... nice!

Who's definitely one to watch?
I really like Scien of the 123 klan.. great style. (editor:
http://www.123klan.com/v2/

Anyway the cliche! People you would like to thank for what and where you are right now?
I would like to thank Yony, Demir and Mike from Imperivm , the G, Reprezent, Saiko, Keep your mustache on!
